Handles our Shopify shop better than expected

We sell homeware online and needed the accounting to keep up with a few hundred orders a month. With the Shopify connection and daily bank feeds it mostly runs itself.

Pros

Sales data flows in without manual imports. Inventory on Plus tracks our stock lines well enough to trust the reorder alerts. VAT on mixed rate products is handled correctly which was our big worry.

Cons

Refunds and partial refunds from Shopify sometimes need manual matching. Support could not initially tell me whether the issue was on the Sage or Shopify side.

Contractor limited company running lean and compliant

One director, one client at a time, dividends and a salary. I ran it through the accountant for years at £120 a month until I realised most of that fee was them typing my data into their software. Now I keep the books in Sage, they review quarterly, and my accounting bill dropped by more than half.

Pros

Director payroll and dividends handled without drama. The accountant logs in rather than me emailing spreadsheets. VAT returns take ten minutes each quarter including the checking.

Cons

Support chat could not answer an IR35 related bookkeeping question and I had to work it out with the accountant, which is fair enough but the chat agent should have said so sooner rather than guessing.

Payroll included sealed it for us

The quarterly VAT submission goes to HMRC in minutes and the checking screens have twice caught mistakes I made before they became problems.

Set up on Saturday, invoicing on Monday

Photographing receipts in the van between jobs means the paperwork mountain never forms in the first place. My other half calls it the marriage saver.

Better than the last two products we used

It has quietly become part of the furniture, which is the best compliment for accounting software. The renewal price gets an annual raised eyebrow.

The chasing emails earn their keep

The price after the offer period is still less than one hour of my accountant time each month. The value argument is not close.

The mobile app pulls its weight

The demo wrote cheques the product struggles to cash

Every quarter something small goes wrong right before the VAT deadline, and every quarter I remember I am the one who chose this. The relationship is strained.

Better than the last two products we used

We came from a rival product after a price rise and the switch was less painful than feared. Sage matched most features and beat it on payroll.
