Flat rate VAT and a busy tearoom, it copes with both

We are on the flat rate scheme and our old software kept calculating VAT the standard way, which meant quarterly corrections. Sage handles the flat rate percentage properly and the return agrees with what the accountant expects first time.

Pros

Flat rate VAT configured once and correct ever since. Till takings entered in two minutes each morning. Staff payroll for our four part timers included in the price rather than another subscription.

Cons

The reports section takes some digging to find the one you want. Would like a favourites list for the three reports I actually use.

Right price, rough edges

Fine software wearing a price that keeps drifting up. Each rise makes the comparison shopping more tempting even though moving is a chore.

Recommend for VAT registered businesses

Solid and safe. When the bank feed hiccuped in the spring support sorted it inside two days, which I gather is not universal with these products.

Support is better than people say

Reading other reviews I expected the support to be dreadful. My experience has been the opposite, three phone calls in eighteen months and all three sorted the problem while I was on the line.

Pros

UK based phone support that picks up. The person I spoke to about a duplicated bank feed actually fixed it rather than raising a ticket into the void. Software itself is steady and predictable.

Cons

Job costing is not really there for a maintenance business, we cannot easily see profit per property or per contract without exporting.

Does enough, delights rarely

It replaced a cheaper product and the honest verdict is mild improvement rather than transformation. The VAT side is better, the invoicing is a wash.

Farm shop books improved, farm books still elsewhere

We took it on for the shop side, cafe takings and retail. That part works well. We hoped to bring the farm itself on too but the subsidy schemes, livestock movements and contracting income do not map neatly, so we run two systems which was not the plan.

Pros

Shop and cafe income reconciles against the card machine deposits neatly. Zero rated and standard rated sales split correctly for the VAT return.

Cons

Not built for agricultural specifics and I do not blame it for that, but the sales call was optimistic about it. Support did their best but farm accounting questions went beyond them quickly.

A proper system at a sensible price

Photographing receipts in the van between jobs means the paperwork mountain never forms in the first place. My other half calls it the marriage saver.

This is my fourth Sage product since 1994 and the best of them

I ran Sage Line 50 businesses for decades. The cloud product finally feels finished, and for my small consultancy in semi retirement it is more than enough.

Familiar Sage logic under a modern interface. My accountant of twenty years uses it happily. Self assessment figures are ready when my tax return is due rather than assembled in a January panic.

Cons

Prices creep upward year on year like everything else in software. The AI assistant is clever but I do wish it was less eager on the home screen.
