New AI features on an old warhorse

Year end used to be a fortnight of stress. With the reports set up properly and a tidy audit trail it is now three days including the accountant queries.

Steady but stuck in its ways

The AI features are clearly where the investment goes now, while long requested fixes to everyday screens stay unaddressed.

Reliable with a couple of gripes

Support have been decent whenever we called, the product is stable, and MTD has been faultless. The renewal negotiation is now an annual fixture though.

Our accountant would riot if we moved

Copilot flagging overdue accounts and odd postings is genuinely useful rather than a gimmick, it caught a duplicated supplier invoice in its first month.

Four stars from a long term user

Remote access lets me do month end from home now, which the old versions never allowed. Not as slick as a browser product but genuinely workable.

Very good, showing its age gracefully

Reliable through two VAT inspections and a bank refinance. The inspectors know Sage output when they see it, which quietly helps.

The practice view: still the right answer for a third of our clients

We look after around ninety businesses. The simple ones have moved to cloud products over the years and rightly so. But for the thirty odd with stock, orders or group structures, Sage 50 remains what we recommend, because the alternative is an ERP project none of them wants to fund.

Pros

Fills the awkward gap between cloud bookkeeping and ERP. Client data is consistent and we can support it deeply because the team has decades on it collectively. MTD submissions have been faultless across every client.

Cons

Sage clearly wants everyone on cloud eventually and the desktop roadmap feels maintained rather than invested in. Price rises are the recurring conversation at client review meetings.

Capable but increasingly hard to justify

Migration inertia is the honest reason we remain. The data history and staff knowledge are worth something, just less each year.

Fine software, tiring relationship

If you have deep stock or group needs it still earns its place. Our needs simplified and we are probably a cloud customer now who has not admitted it.
