Project costing keeps our machining jobs honest

Every job through the shop gets costed, materials, subcontract and labour, against the quote. Sage 50 Professional does this without us needing a separate job costing system, and at year end the auditors take the data without a murmur. The only sore point is what it now costs against what we paid five years ago.

Pros

Project costing that ties to the ledgers rather than living in a spreadsheet. Fixed asset register with depreciation schedules our auditors accept as is. Bespoke reports built once and run monthly for the board.

Cons

Subscription cost has roughly doubled over five years for the same headcount, and extra users are dear. The interface modernisation is cosmetic, underneath it is the same screens I learned in 2010, which honestly suits me fine but the graduates find it baffling.

Sage Response— responded on 4 December 2025

Thank you Geraldine. Pricing reflects continued investment in MTD, AI features and support, but we hear the concern on multi year increases and your account manager can review options including annual billing. Sage UK Customer Care

Keeps the accountant happy

The functionality is genuinely strong, stock, orders, reporting, all of it. The experience of using it is where the age shows, dense screens and a real learning curve.

Solid and dependable, price aside

We looked hard at moving to cloud software and concluded the features we rely on do not exist there yet. Staying was right, but I wish staying were cheaper.

Would choose it again tomorrow

Three companies, consolidated management accounts, departments per branch and budgets per manager. Nothing else near this price does all of that properly.

The end of a long road

Repeated crashes on our multi user setup, a data repair that cost us a consultancy fee, and a renewal quote higher than ever. Whatever goodwill remained is spent.

Does everything, enjoys none of it

It is hard software to love and easy software to rely on. Nothing about the day to day sparks joy, the screens are dense, the errors are cryptic, and yet in six years it has never lost a transaction, never fudged the VAT and never been the reason for a late month end.

Reliability above all, the numbers are always right. Stock counts reconcile. Recurring entries do their thing without supervision. When you learn a workflow it never changes underneath you.

Cons

Feels dated because it is. Error messages assume you speak Sage. Search inside transactions is weak, you learn to use the audit trail instead. The AI additions feel aimed at newer users, the veterans just want faster screens.

Not the Sage we signed up with

Between the base rise, the user charges and the module extras, our bill has nearly doubled in four years. We are actively trialling alternatives for the first time in fifteen years.

Depth the cloud products still lack

We run stock, orders and three companies through it and it has never once let us down at month end. The depth is the whole point, everything joins up to the ledgers underneath.
