New AI features on an old warhorse

Being able to give the auditors read access and let them help themselves saved us a week of pulling samples this year.

Reliable with a couple of gripes

Support have been decent whenever we called, the product is stable, and MTD has been faultless. The renewal negotiation is now an annual fixture though.

The software is fine, the pricing model is not

I bought Sage outright in 2007 and ran it for years on nothing but the odd upgrade. Now I rent the same product for more per year than the perpetual licence ever cost, and every renewal letter finds a new way to charge for what used to be included. The product still works, that has never been the complaint.

Dependable ledgers, our data going back seventeen years is all in there and accessible. Stock module suits a wholesaler. The bookkeeper knows it blindfolded.

Cons

Subscription pricing that rises relentlessly. Charged extra for users, extra for CIS, extra for currency on Standard. Support quality has declined while the price went the other way. We stay because moving seventeen years of history is the devil we do not know.

Sage Response— responded on 23 September 2025

Hello Bill, we are sorry the pricing changes have landed this way. The move to subscription funds MTD compliance, security updates and the new AI capabilities, but we would like to review your plan to make sure you are not paying for additions you do not use. Sage UK Customer Care

Cannot recommend anymore

We recommended Sage to others for years. The combination of price, pace and support in the last two has ended that, and our accountant hears the same from other clients weekly.

More system than my chandlery needs, kept for the stock module

Honest truth, a shop my size should probably be on something simpler and cheaper. But nothing simpler handles six thousand slow moving stock lines with supplier part numbers the way Sage 50 does, so I stay and grumble about the invoice every month.

Stock records hold every part number, bin location and supplier reference. Year end stock valuation the accountant trusts. It never crashes, ever.

Cons

I use a tenth of the screens and pay for all of them. The modern AI features mean nothing to a one man office. Would love a small shop edition at a small shop price.

Happy apart from the invoice

The report designer rewards patience, we get exactly the numbers we want. Getting there took a course and some swearing.

Rock solid through every year end

Year end used to be a fortnight of stress. With the reports set up properly and a tidy audit trail it is now three days including the accountant queries.

Depth the cloud products still lack

It has swallowed fifteen years of our trading history and still opens a report across all of it in seconds. Long memory matters in a business like ours.

Remote access lets me do month end from home now, which the old versions never allowed. Not as slick as a browser product but genuinely workable.
